Special events on Molokai have two striking characteristics that set them apart from most events elsewhere. First, the majority are cultural in nature. Second, they are produced by and for local residents. (Though on the “Friendly Isle,” visitors are always enthusiastically welcomed.)

Events include several annual festivals of Hawaiian culture that showcase hula, island arts and crafts, Hawaiian games and food. One of the largest and most intriguing of these is the annual Molokai Ka Hula Piko on the West Side. Celebrating hula's birth on Molokai, the fete features hula performances, lectures, story-telling, and Hawaiian food, and crafts.

Molokai's athletes compete in various ocean sporting competitions, including grueling races from Molokai to the island of O`ahu in six man (or six woman) outrigger canoes.
