Kaule o Nanahoa (Phallic Rock)

One of Molokai’s lesser-known, but most legendary attractions is the fabled Kaule o Nanahoa (Phallic Rock.)  Located at the base of Nananhoa Hill near the Kalaupapa lookout, the six-foot tall natural rock monument is believed to have some very special powers.

Tip: Kaule o Nanahoa (Phallic Rock) is only a short hike from the trailhead to Kalaupapa. It is well worth the walk.

According to Hawaiian legend, the male fertility god known as Nanahoa, lived on Molokai. After a particularly nasty quarrel with his wife, he was transformed into the unquestionably phallic rock. For centuries, women visited the stone, bringing offerings to Nanahoa with hopes of becoming fertile.

The rock juts out of the ground at the end of a trail that leads through a wonderful ironwood forest.
